The Finishing Touches: Pillows and Throws

November 18, 2016

To me, rugs, pillows and throws are the finishing touches that make a space feel like home. All of these are important additions to any room I’m working on. Over the past month I’ve been telling you all about how I got into designing my rug line and also breaking down my rug collections individually. What we haven’t talked about yet are the smaller touches: pillows and throws.

Just like with rugs, I’m choosy when it comes to these little things. I’d say just as much as I am with the big things—like furniture or paint colors. Because these are the pieces that bring it all together and make a room feel lived-in and cozy, not just “put together” or “staged”.

The Duke Throw Collection

My youngest son, Duke, is my snuggly child. I love this about him. It’s always a good night when he crawls up in my lap just to give me a hug and tell me he loves me. That’s why I named my throw collection after him; he’s sweet and thoughtful and nothing makes me feel warmer or more at home than when he’s feeling like being the snuggle bug he is.

I’d describe my throw line as simple, but at the same time, there is plenty of interest and texture in them. They add to a room without being a bold distraction—which let’s them pair perfectly with my pillow collection.

Throws can be used on the back of a couch to add texture, or fold a few and toss them in a basket or crate in the living room or guest room for easy access. Having extra blankets sitting around on a chilly day is always a cozy and welcomed element in a room—and one I never miss out on adding.

My Magnolia Home Pillows

Pillows were easily one of the most fun elements to design. Something that’s great about accent pillows is how easy it is to switch them out seasonally or when you need a change of pace. When designing, I used a mixture of bold and simple colors, patterns and textures. Some I even used tassels or thick stitching to make them stand out. I love how well they pair with my rugs and throws, but I also like that it’s not mandatory that they go together. Set them on a bed or even a bench, and they’ll look perfect all on their own.

If all of this is a little overwhelming, next week I’ll be doing a post over choosing the perfect size rug for your space, and how to set your furniture up around it. This will give you a starting point, and from there, choosing pillows and throws will just be the fun part! You can find my pillows and throws for sale at Magnolia Home Rugs retailers near you.

Comment below if you’ve snagged a Duke collection throw or any of my Magnolia Home pillows. I would love to see them all in your space, so tag me on Instagram (@joannagaines) if you post a photo!
