Stairwell/Hallway: Before + After

Under the stairs, we created a cozy little reading nook with a custom bench seat and built-in drawers for more storage.

what we updated:
  • Replaced existing stair rail with a custom wooden railing
  • Added light-grey plaster to the walls, inspired by Quaint Cottage Paint (from Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines crafted with KILZ)
  • Installed a wall sconce in the nook, plus new flush mounts down the hallway
  • Added a set of French doors that pair back to the paneling 
  • Upholstered the bench seat in a whimsical white-and-blue fabric

Den Sitting: Before + After

We reconfigured the former primary suite into a den for new living space.

what we updated:

  • Kept the original red-stone fireplace and wood floors 
  • Installed 4” light-oak paneling on the ceiling and 6” tongue and groove on the walls, then painted it Morning Snow
  • Added an arched opening to define the coffee nook
  • Installed custom cabinetry (painted Mountain Currant) with brass cupboard latches 
  • To the walls, we added a handmade clay tile backsplash with a floating shelf 
  • Introduced a black soapstone countertop with a copper undermount sink and brass faucet
  • Added new flush mounts throughout

Laundry Room: Before + After

We created a new, larger laundry room from its previous location in the hallway closet and former primary bathroom.

what we updated:

  • Added new floor tile
  • Added antique-oak paneling on the walls and new custom cabinetry throughout
  • Painted the windows Mountain Currant
  • Applied ski-patterned wallpaper
  • Installed a burgundy tile backsplash
  • Put in black soapstone countertops with an undermount sink and brass faucet
  • Added a new washer and dryer
  • Added a bench seat and upholstered it in gingham print fabric

Den: Before + After

Also reconfigured from the former primary suite, was this extension of the den and its additional living space.

what we updated:

  • Installed new wooden flooring to match existing floors in the den sitting room
  • Cozied up the former primary bedroom with light-oak paneling everywhere
  • Painted the windows Conservatory
  • Updated flush mounts throughout 
  • Added French doors and a bench seat upholstered in a light bouclé fabric 
  • Built a new red-stone fireplace to match the one upstairs

Deck + Back Exterior: Before + After

what we updated:

  • Painted the exterior Trailhead to settle the home into its surroundings
  • Painted the railings and refinished the deck
  • Added copper window boxes and repotted the original planters
  • Built foundations for the two new interior fireplaces on the exterior 
  • Leveled and widened steps down to the river (plus added a pipe rail) to make the path more walkable
  • Added a firepit and chairs down by the river
