WATCH THE SHOW

Over the last decade, Colorado has become a home away from home for our family. Between yearly ski trips and spring break getaways, we fell in love with the mountains, the rivers, and the abundance of fresh air—and somewhere along the way started to wonder if Colorado was meant to be a bigger part of our family’s future. As Chip is known to do, he started looking at real estate—casually—until he stumbled upon this house nestled in the Rocky Mountains. From the moment we pulled into the long driveway, it immediately felt like we’d found far more than what we’d been looking for. It had good bones, the right square footage, but mostly, it felt like a home away from home—one that even our extended families could get away to. While we knew that saying “yes” to a major renovation project outside of Texas (our first!) would require being stretched beyond our comfort zone, we had a feeling taking on this fixer upper would be worth it in the end.

We can’t wait to share this project with you in the coming weeks!

A Future in the Making

When Chip and Jo first walked through this outdated yet charming 1960s home in the woods, they knew it had potential to hold family memories for years to come. The original blueprint included two bedrooms, two bathrooms (plus a powder bath!), a wrap-around deck, and easy river access for fishing. Two other major selling points were the guest cottages tucked along the main driveway.

During their initial walk-through, they also realized the home would need some restructuring to maximize space and optimize flow for their family. So, they worked with local experts, including a skilled contractor, to help bring their vision to life and be their “boots on the ground” throughout the entire renovation process.

Materials + Design Elements

The materials, finishes, and design elements were chosen specifically to blend with the surroundings of this charming mountain home. Think refined yet rustic woodwork mixed with European cottage-inspired colors, textures, and patterns for an all-around cozy feel. Jo also leaned into opposing design styles (like masculine and feminine, old and new) throughout the space for a layered, well-balanced look.

Magnolia Home Paint: The Mountain House Collection

In any renovation, big or small, color sets the tone. Jo curated a collection of paint hues inspired by the natural setting of Fixer Upper: Colorado Mountain House, and many are used within the home. You can shop all six colors here on magnolia.com or find them in person at your local Ace Hardware.
