Fall Wardrobe Essentials

September 29, 2014

With October just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to post some of my fall wardrobe essentials. Although not my expertise, fashion seems to be a popular theme on our social media channels and website. Disclaimer: I am not a fashion expert. In fact, if you knew the history of most of the clothes in my closet you would stop reading right now.

In all seriousness, my friends make fun of me because typically I wear the same outfit almost everyday. It’s comfortable, easy, and I don’t have to think about it.  However, since we are filming- I have to come up with multiple outfits for each episode which requires a lot of trial and error and creativity. Chip always laughs as I try on all my outfits for the next day; he knows I would rather be digging a ditch than sorting through my closet.

Although a lot of my time is spent in front of a camera these days, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to photo shoots. Last week we shot pictures at the farm and I felt like a goofball and kept making awkward faces at the camera.

The point of this post is to introduce a few concepts I use in my own wardrobe. I’ve included some of the shots from this session and I hope you’ll find some ideas and pieces that fit your style and budget!

Here’s the deal, I am all about investing in good basics: A good pair of boots, jeans, and a bag. When I find a good pair of jeans or boots that I love, I wear them for years. There are always going to be cuter, newer boots that come out but I like the character that comes with a good ol’ pair of boots. I feel as if they have been worn to fit my lifestyle.

These Freebird Drover boots are my go-to boots for demo day or for work days on the farm. They have that worn-in feel to them and they fit like a glove. If you don’t already have a good work boot, look for boots that aren’t too sleek or polished. You want to invest in boots that can withstand some scratches and dents and still look good.

When it comes to jeans, I am a minimalist. I literally have two pairs – one skinny jean (low rise Citizen brand) and one flare jean (old generic brand). I treat jeans like boots; I wear them till they are worn out.

I like denim and I like denim on denim. I typically put a more feminine styled cami under my denim button downs to soften up the look. One of my website sponsors Evereve sent me this great denim top and this long sweater. I love online sites like Evereve, because I hardly have time for shopping anymore these days. Most of my wardrobe for the show is from online sites like this one! If I’m in the mood to change things up I simply add to my basics by throwing on a sweater, adding a great cuff or necklace, or grabbing a scarf.

I love simple jewelry that makes a bold statement. I’m a fan of leather and gold because it typically goes with most of my things. This is one of my all time favorites and you can get one in my online store.

A good pair of riding boots is one of my favorite things about fall. Unlike my work boots, riding boots fit well with a dressy or casual outfit and are versatile. The boots pictured above I’ve had for years, but have seen similar styles at many major department stores. A classy pair of boots will always steal the show. I tend to wear more solid pieces with my riding boots like a casual shirt or jacket. They also look great with tights, dresses, or jeans.

Layers are my best friend. I like to mix and match and layer during the fall because in Texas it can range from 65 to 100 degrees in the same day. I love mixing textures and colors on top with my basics (jeans and boots) on bottom. I’m not a pattern person, so my tops are pretty simple – I feel this leaves me more room to accessorize. For instance, the simple layers in the photo above allowed me to dress up my outfit with these earrings! And no matter what I am wearing, a great leather bag can finish off any outfit.

This is one of my favorite bags. I can walk out the door with jeans and a t-shirt, throw this leather bag over my shoulder, and still look put together! This bag is now available in my online store!

Wedges and booties are also fun for the fall because they add some sass to your outfit (Coclico wedges  shown here). Since I typically wear simple jeans and a top, I will occasionally throw on a fun pair of shoes to mix things up!

In summary, I have noticed people like to dress like they decorate their home. I like simple, timeless, and comfortable. I am not a trendy person in design or in my wardrobe. For me, it’s better to fill my closet with quality items I know I can wear multiple times, rather than trying to keep up with the latest trends.  I want to be able to relax and feel good in whatever I wear. As you assess your style for the fall have fun with it and trust your gut. Figure out a style that works for you and your lifestyle and stick with it. Remember there are a lot more important things about you than what you are wearing. So relax, have fun with it and walk out the door with confidence!
