Spring at Magnolia Market: 2020

A note from Jo on this season’s install:

Spring has officially arrived at the market! This time of year always has me craving simplicity and renewed intention, which is exactly what we’re exploring this season at Magnolia as we delve into the theme of purpose. The idea that we’re clinging to and want to communicate most is this: where we were yesterday and where we find ourselves today matters for who we become tomorrow. We’re unpacking this idea more in our spring issue of Magnolia Journal_–on newsstands February 14._

The visual display team blew me away with their creativity and attention to detail in this season’s displays at the market. In our first concepting meeting, I told the team how inspired I was by our trip to Moorten Botanical Garden in Palm Springs. Our spring issue’s cover was photographed at Clark Moorten's home—fondly known as Cactus Castle—which sits among the more than 3,000 plant species that the Moorten family began planting almost 70 years ago. I wanted guests to have that same experience of walking into a “Cactarium”–and that’s exactly what it feels like when you walk into the market. If you’re in the neighborhood this spring, I hope you’ll stop by and take it all in.

_An ombré, acrylic-painted wall welcomes you into the market right when you enter. The idea that where you are today matters for who you’ll be tomorrow is featured throughout the spring issue of the magazine._
_An assortment of cacti and plants are placed throughout the store. The Saguaro cacti are made from pipe with pool noodles placed over them, covered with spackle, and then painted. The prickly pear cacti are made from insulation foam, then covered in plaster and paint. Sewing pins give the cacti their prickly texture. The agave plants are shaped out of chipboard, plastered and painted, then secured together with wire, which allows them to bend for a more natural look. To make the store environment feel more like a desert (minus the heat!), you’ll notice displays covered in dry grout to create a sandy, dusty look._
_Mounds of sand surround some of the Saguaro cacti, made from a plywood base that’s covered with carpet, then painted with glue so the sand sticks to it._
_For a burst of color, our team added cactus flowers to the prickly pear cacti. The petals are made from dyed crepe paper, and the insides are made from embroidery floss with a styrofoam ball as the center._
_Near the front entrance and in the kitchen area, you'll find a few live plants on display._
_This ladder arch holds 1,500 Bougainvillea flowers that were all handmade._
_To make these flowers, the team cut hand-dyed tissue paper into petal shapes and then used dipped wire to create the stamens inside the flower._

We hope you’ll stop by and experience it for yourself! Our spring collection launches online next week, we can't wait to show you what's new this season!
