The Art of the Afternoon Break

Call it teatime, call it fika, call it a classic pick-me-up or an afternoon break…

We’re all familiar with the feeling, when sunlight is pouring through the windows—and the day is well underway. Time feels like it’s moving at a rapid pace, and it can be easy to miss the present moment by focusing on the future or just trying to keep up. Making space for a pause to simply be can help ground us in presence, reinvigorate creativity, and even romanticize the most run-of-the-mill tasks.

Many cultures and countries around the world observe some sort of midday intermission. To follow suit, we’ve pulled together our favorite ways to integrate this practice into everyday life. Try it for yourself, and you might be surprised how a cozy sip (like coffee or tea) and a snack can energize you to move through the day with a little extra pep in your step. Settle in and stay as long as you’d like.

Make a Plan

Here’s the thing about breaks: They typically don’t happen unless you intentionally pencil them into your schedule. Block off some time in your calendar as a reminder—it could be a daily, weekly, or even monthly occurrence.

This could mean putting aside a quiet moment to catch your breath, taking five minutes to write a few things you’re thankful for, or making time to enjoy a treat with a friend. The setting doesn’t need to be perfect; it can be wherever you are. An office cubicle, a corner cafe, or even just behind a closed door in your home.

Psst, stocking up on mugs, teacups, and snack plates/bowls can make slowing down a little easier (and more fun!). Placing them in plain sight offers little prompts throughout the day to sit down and savor—rather than always taking things on the go.

Choose Your Pick-Me-Up

The classic afternoon pick-me-up is tea. This practice of slowly steeping nature’s best ingredients has been a go-to communal pastime for centuries. (To learn more about the ritual of loose-leaf tea, plus get some recipes and tools to try making it yourself, pick up a copy of our fall 2026 Magnolia Journal.)

If you’re not a tea-drinker, good news. There are no rules! Your afternoon break might include coffee (another time-honored favorite), an energizing bite, or simply sitting in silence and reflecting for a while. In case you’re looking for some ideas, here are a few snack and drink pairings that go great together—and help round out the day.

A pick-me-up isn’t limited to food; it could also be a hobby! You may have heard it said: If you work with your mind, then rest with your hands—and vice versa. When your brain is busy, especially if you’ve been working on a screen all day, putting pen to paper can be a welcome relief. We like having plenty of cute journals, pens, and even crafts at the ready to accompany some recharge time. Conversely, if you’ve been constantly on the go, consider pausing for a few minutes with a good book to let yourself enjoy some stillness.

Let Yourself Linger

However you choose to linger longer this season, try your best to set aside the demands of the day to be present, take a breath—and take it all in. This moment, here and now, can be a reminder that time is a gift and something to be savored, not rushed. So, light a candle, put on a good playlist, and take all the time you need. Your to-do list will always be there, but today will be gone tomorrow.
