DIY Magnetic Chalkboard January 16, 2016 Last week, Joanna shared some unique ways to keep your home organized while also creating intentional creative spaces for your kiddos in the new year. This week, we wanted to continue the same theme with this cute and easy-to-make magnetic chalkboard. These memo boards are great to remind you of upcoming events, to hang your grocery list on, or to leave a quote or message for the family. Here’s what you’ll need: -Piece of masonite board (this one measures 22″ x 24″) -Two 1″x 2″ pine boards (cut at 45 degree angles and measuring 22″) -Two 1″x 2″ pine boards (cut at 45 degree angles and measuring 24″) -Galvanized sheet metal -Exacto knife -Construction adhesive -Picture hanging D rings -Drill -Chalkboard paint -Roller Instructions: 1. Cut a piece of masonite board to the size you need (this one measured 22″ x 24″). 2. Cut a total of four pieces of pine planks with a 45 degree angles. Two should measure 22″ and the other two 24″. 3. Cut a piece of galvanized sheet metal to fit masonite board using tin snips or an Exacto knife. If using an Exacto knife: run the blade over the metal several times until it cuts through. NOTE: sheet metal is very sharp, so use caution while handling it. 4. Apply a generous amount of construction adhesive to the masonite board. 5. Place galvanize sheet on top of adhesive and weigh down or clamp together to hold in place. Allow to dry for a couple of hours. (not pictured) 6. Once firmly adhered to board, paint with chalkboard paint, applying two coats in total, allowing paint to completely dry in between coats. 7. Using your favorite color stain, stain the pine planks and allow to dry. 8. Once stain is dry, place over galvanized sheet and secure corners with a nail gun. 9. Screw two D hooks in the back to hang (not pictured) 10. It’s recommended that you let the chalkboard set for 24 hours before you “season” it. (you season the board by using the side of a piece of white chalk and running the chalk over the entire surface of the chalkboard. Wipe off any chalk with a cotton rag) This large memo board would be perfect for a command center in the kitchen, an office accessory, or fun as a creative space in the playroom for the kids to draw. You can also paint the frame a fun color or use a different color chalk paint if you like. This is your project, own it and make it your own.
