How to Brighten the Mood of a Space

There could be many reasons why you’d want to brighten up a space. Maybe there are architectural features that feel dark, like wooden beams or trim. Maybe it’s a place in your home that doesn’t get much natural light, like a basement or hallway. Or, maybe you’re just looking to infuse a little more spring-like personality into a room with the help of a few updates.

When a space feels bright, literally and figuratively, it gets used more. It welcomes life in, along with all who we want to share it with. We love the idea of putting every corner of home to good use, both with beauty and purpose. So, no matter what kind of project you might have in mind, keep reading for our styling tips that let in some light.

Tip 1: Mirrors

Not only are mirrors a useful element of decor, but they can be placed strategically as well. Set one on the wall opposite a light source, be it a window or a lamp, to double its brightening effect. All sizes can work here, whether it’s a floor-length mirror or small reflective sconce. These can be especially helpful in hallways, entryways, and corners often overlooked.

Tip 2: Flowers

There’s something infinitely cheery about a bright burst of blooms. While fresh is always best, we’re also partial to the practicality of faux florals (which we make the case for here) that don’t need upkeep and you can arrange as organically as you like. Try setting a vase in an unexpected place that doesn’t get natural sunlight, like a bookshelf or basement office, to lift the room’s mood.

Tip: For a more natural look, stick with several bunches of one faux floral style and color rather than mixing.

Tip 3: Negative Space

A crowded room can often feel like a stressed room. Having pockets of negative space, whether along a shelf or on a wall where the color and texture can show through, creates places where the eye can land naturally, rather than feeling boxed in. This can also be a reminder to consciously clear away clutter from surfaces, like atop a dresser or coffee table. Install hooks for bags and coats or storage containers to keep things together so that a spaciousness can present—a bright idea indeed.

Tip 4: Textiles

From curtains on the window to the layers on your bed, if you’re trying to brighten things up, consider how fabric plays a part in conveying a fresh sense. Swapping heavier textures, like velvet and flannel, for the breeziness of linen or the soft feel of a lighter cotton sets the tone for a new season, one with warmer temps and longer, sunnier, days. The same goes for pattern. Soft shapes, delicate designs, and details reminiscent of artisanal handiwork, especially on pillows or throws, can balance heavier furniture with bright elements.

Tip 5: Playful Pieces

Brightness is a state of mind just as much as a physical attribute, so don’t forget to have fun with your decor and how it can put a smile on your face, plus those of your family and friends. Playfulness is akin to lightheartedness, and sometimes that’s as simple as having a game out on display or a quirky statue next to a stack of books. The unexpected can be an invitation to remember what brings joy and how opportunities for it abound, especially—and perhaps most importantly—when feeling a sense of ease at home.
