Mini Reni 01: Dining Room

Welcome to Mini Reni: the dining room!

The original dining room was essentially a plain, white box. Since the budget was small, I had to get creative in order to create real visual interest. I wanted to add a unique play on texture and design for the ceiling, so we installed 1x6 boards and crown molding, both painted Drawing Room gray with a satin finish. I had initially planned to replace the existing door for the HVAC closet with an antique door to create more of a focal point, but to save on money and time, we added a simple trim detail and painted the door the same gray as the ceiling. And lastly, we installed a new chandelier to center the space and hung velvet curtains that helped give the room a more finished look and tie the design together.

I hope these updates help draw this young family around the table for years to come!

Here are more details of how we transformed the space, tips on how you can do the same at home, and ways to shop the look.

More Details On What We Updated

Ceiling Treatment: We added 1x6” boards with 4” of exposure, and repeated the pattern across the ceiling—then added a 4” crown molding. Note: Use paint grade wood for a more affordable option.

Paint: After treating the ceiling, we painted it in a soft, inviting gray in a satin finish (Drawing Room, Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines crafted by KILZ.) The walls had an older texture, so to brighten them up, we added a fresh coat of white paint (One Horn White, Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines crafted by KILZ).

Door details: To give the door a little character, we created trim to make it look paneled, then painted it the same color as the ceiling for cohesion.

New light fixture: Replaced the fan with a more modern chandelier from Lighting Reimagined.
