After-School Snacks
When the kids come home from school, the first thing they do is open the fridge and the pantry looking for a snack. We have healthy snacks on hand, but sometimes, you just need something a little sweeter, so I like to surprise them by leaving a plate of goodies on the counter when they get home. It’s a simple way to let them know I was thinking about them while they were gone.
So today I’m sharing a few of our family’s go-to snacks, starting with my granddad’s Syrian Donuts. They’re more dense than a typical donut, lightly-sweetened, and coated in a sweet glaze. This treat holds a lot of memories for me—of baking with my granddad in the kitchen as he taught me the recipe his father taught him. I’m also making Crew’s Cookies, named after our youngest son. These cookies are simple, light, and filled with notes of cinnamon and vanilla. To finish up, I’m making two snacks that are weekly favorites in our house, and ones that you probably already know and love: Granola Bars and Banana Bread.
Whether it’s my great-grandad's donut recipe or a plate of granola bars that the kids can grab as they come into the house, the kitchen connects me back to family time and time again—and that’s why I love it so much.
