Mini Reni: Moody Small Space Makeover

For this project, we got to start with a blank canvas. The homeowners had a large den at the back of their home that wasn’t really serving an intentional purpose, and at the same time they were lacking functional spaces like a mudroom, pantry, and more spacious kitchen. So, together we decided to divide their oversized den into these three essential spaces. Wanting to tackle the kitchen themselves, they handed over the design of the mudroom and pantry to me. Knowing my design plan would influence their future renovations, I wanted to make sure we pulled together a distinct look and feel that they could build on. The space we had to work with was truly “mini”—essentially a long, narrow hallway—so the details had to be what stole the show. Here, it’s the wallpaper, the pop of color in the tile, and all of the beautiful brass finishes and fixtures that make this small space feel like a big warm welcome.

What We Updated: Mudroom

Cabinetry: We added tongue and groove wall paneling, custom-made cabinetry, and a bench seat to create hidden storage. The arched detailing mirrors the cased opening, seamlessly tying the mudroom and studio space together. We also added antiqued brass hardware (knobs, large pulls, and cup pulls) for added charm and upholstered the bench in ticking striped fabric.

Paint: We painted the paneling, trim, and baseboards Coffee Nook Trim, Door + Cabinetry Paint in Satin Finish and the ceiling Coffee Nook Interior Paint in Matte Finish. (From Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines crafted by KILZ.) Psst, when using a darker paint color on paneling, use a dark primer to avoid a light layer showing through the cracks!

Trim: To accentuate doors and the arch between rooms, we added custom dimensional trim—plus standard baseboards and crown molding from the local hardware store.

Tile: We installed 8″x8″ cement white and brown tiles on the floor in a diagonal pattern for a cozy cottage feel, then set it with light grey grout.

Lighting: A new flush mount with scalloped detailing centers the space.

Wallpaper: Light floral wallpaper fills the walls between paneling to set the tone with personality and balance moody hues.

How We Styled It: Mudroom

Right off the entry, the mudroom serves as a functional space—layered with deep colors and charming details. To the right, our Jane Brass Mirror lengthens the room and reflects natural light. A twisted stand (see similar) supports a plant for organic movement, sided by a pair of mud boots.

To the left, three wicker baskets under the built-in bench seat help stow the clutter that tends to collect in an entry. Our Callin Etched Brass Bud Vases line the top shelf next to a charcoal sketch.

What We Updated: Art Studio

The same floor tile, paneling, paint, and light fixtures carry into this space for a cohesive look. Here are a few studio-specific additions:

Lower cabinetry: We installed custom lower cabinetry, topped with open shelving. This provides enough space to tuck away clutter and display things that spark creativity, like art supplies, design books, and plants.

Counter: The cabinetry is topped with a soapstone counter. This durable material plays nicely with the darker paint on the cabinets.

Door: We updated the door leading into the laundry room with a fresh coat of paint, simple trim molding, and new hardware as a budget-friendly way to elevate.

How We Styled It: Art Studio

The open shelving is layered with decor and supplies to inspire, including more brass bud vases, our Shaina Adjustable Display Easel propping a palette, the Daybreak Candle, and two vintage-inspired art pieces. A ribbed ceramic table lamp from Hearth & Hand with MagnoliaOpens in new tab provides additional light for the small space.

Across the wall, our Quinn Wooden Dish Cabinet (coming this fall!) serves as a catchall for artwork and more supplies. The Vintage Botanicals in Bloom Framed Art hanging between shelves adds an element of storied charm surrounded by a basket of brushes, books, plants, and more decorative objects.
