Seed + Supply was one of the first additions we made to the Silos back in 2015. Before it served as our garden shop on the grounds, it was used as an additional retail space at the original Magnolia shop (what we lovingly refer to as The Little Shop on Bosque). This year, the team had the idea to evolve the building yet again, but this time to serve as a creative workshop space for our guests. I immediately loved the idea. It has always been my hope that our guests’ experience at the Silos would inspire creativity and connection. The first workshop we wanted to install was based on one of my own hobbies I love to do at the farm. Flower pressing and floral preservation has become one of my favorite ways to mark a memory or savor a season, and we wanted to invite our guests to do the same. So, we redesigned this space to feel like time slowing down, so you’ll see a lot of natural, raw elements combined with refined finishes to create that elevated experience we were going for. When I look at this space now, it’s wild to think of all the purposes it has served. But that’s the beauty of a mini reni. No matter the size, no matter your budget, you are reimagining the story of a space—and that will forever be my favorite part of design.
What We Updated: Interior
Paint: The whole interior was refreshed with one color, Juniper Tree Trim, Door, + Cabinetry Paint in Satin Finish. (From Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines crafted by KILZ.)
Flooring: The brick floor was still in good shape, so we just cleaned and sealed it!
Trim: We left the original plywood walls, but added vertical strips of trim (placed about 10″ apart) to add some interest and texture. New trim was also installed around each window, paired with scalloped detail beneath for a little embellishment. Psst, using paint-grade material can help keep costs low!
Wooden pegs: Rows of painted wooden pegs were installed along the walls to hold tools of the trade—and the bags of workshop guests.
Lighting: Three handwoven rattan pendants line the ceiling, adding a natural feel to the space.
Storage: We added custom-made wooden shelving to the back wall, including slats for paper and cubbies to hold dried flowers.
Flower rack: The main moment of the space is the custom white-wood rack, intended to hang dried bloom bundles from the ceiling.
We also added a working sink and all new plumbing to make it a functional workshop setting.
How We Styled It: Interior
Centering the space are three custom-made tables—one long craft table surrounded by curved, green chairs and two copper-topped work tables. Much of the styling serves two purposes: to fill the space with story and provide creative inspiration. These elements include wildflowers hanging from the ceiling, rows of plant clippings along the table, cloches, and some of Jo's first presses (picked by Chip and Crew at the farm).
Our Lavinia Turned Leg Stools (tall and short) elevate leafy plants in the corner, sided by a vintage floral press, herbarium books, and terracotta planters filled with greenery.
The open shelving on the back wall is stocked with pieces to spark inspiration, like Jo’s Pressed Herbarium Prints, the Field Flower Press, Herbarium Journal, jars of craft supplies, and, of course, our Greenhouse Candle.
What We Updated: Exterior
Paint: The exterior shutters and door were painted the same green used around the Silos, Cottage Grove Exterior Paint in a Satin Finish. (From Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines crafted by KILZ.)
Siding: We re-sided the shed with durable shingle siding from James Hardie.
Lighting: New 10-inch copper sconces were installed to flank the entry.
Shutters, doors + beams: We added new front doors, updated the window shutters to be louvered, and replaced the former cedar-wrapped beams with vintage hemlock beams.
How We Styled It: Exterior
We topped the garden shed with a vintage-like herbarium sign, inspired by one of Jo’s favorite hobbies on the farm. We also added new terracotta planters and benches to make the entrance feel more welcoming.
