This ranch style home was a unique project that we had the honor to work on for our friend David Ridley. Chip and I both agreed David is Waco’s ‘Most Eligible Bachelor’ and was in need of a fitting bachelor pad. David loves fishing and watersports, so his home’s proximity to Lake Waco was attractive and convenient.
David loves to host, whether it’s to watch a game, to play a round of sand volleyball, or to share a meal, so creating intentional spaces for him to entertain was important from the get-go. David ultimately decided on “The Peach House” to be his new home, based on its potential for an open floor plan, a great big backyard, and its closeness to Lake Waco.
In order to optimize the space for entertaining, we ended up removing quite a few walls in the living, dining and kitchen area. Since this was going to be the heart of David’s home, I really wanted to pull out all the stops in here.
I wanted to have a cohesive, masculine look throughout the home, so I decided to incorporate reclaimed wood accents in each room. In the living room we refaced the fireplace with raw shiplap. I loved the way this broke up all of the gray, helped define the room, and really created a strong focal point.
I also found this interesting canoe frame and knew it would make the perfect feature wall for David’s living room. We added lots of seating in this area to make space for David’s guests and make this area cozy and comfortable.
In the dining area, I knew David would want an informal set-up, so we opened this space up to the rest of the home and made sure he had plenty of room for friends.
David’s kitchen was one of my favorite places to get creative in this home. This was one of the first projects we designed solely with a guy in mind, so we really got to have fun with it.
David knew he wanted double islands rather than one long island in his kitchen. The extra storage and seating combined with adding to the ease of traffic flow made this detail a win-win.
After taking down so many walls to open up this space, the kitchen area lacked definition. This was one of the most important spaces in the home, so we raised the ceiling and added raw shiplap to define the space and add warmth.
Along the back wall to the backyard we replaced the windows and added matching custom french doors to allow for lots of natural light. We were also able to build a small mudroom and incorporate another barn door.
As an added bonus, a sand a volleyball court and basketball court were installed so that David could host tournaments in his own backyard. This was kind of a dream of his, so it was so fun that David’s parents and friends wanted to surprise him with this sweet housewarming gift. We wanted David to have quick access to his new backyard, so we added french doors to the master bedroom leading straight to his back porch.
We joined two rooms to create one large master suite for David. I wanted this room to have the same style as the rest of the home, so we incorporated more of the reclaimed wood and iron. We also installed the wood flooring and the same soft gray paint and dark gray trim for a modern-but-masculine look.
My friend and graphic designer, Clayton, designed these fishing lure wooden prints for David to tie in his love for fishing. They matched David’s style and brought a personal touch to his room.
I wanted to keep the master bath bold and unique. I went with concrete countertops, a black slate backsplash, and gray lower cabinets with modern pulls and hardware.
We also installed this dark gray stoned-in shower and carried that wood theme to these the open shelving units I designed specifically for David’s space. This wood detail warmed up this small space and broke up the stone.
To update the exterior of this house, was painted it a light gray and incorporated raw shiplap shutters and new cedar and stone posts along the front of the house. David’s house also got a brand new roof and minimalistic and classic green landscaping along the front to bring this place to life.
David Ridley’s house was definitely one of the most unique and masculine style homes we’ve been able to do in Season 3, and I have to say, it is now the ultimate bachelor pad. David loved it, and we hope he continues to love it for years to come.
