Incorporating Wallpaper Into Your Home

Wallpaper can feel like a big commitment, not only because of its perceived permanence, but because adding a print or pattern to your walls is typically a bolder move than solid paint. Another hesitation might come from anyone who has had to peel and scrape off old wallpaper in a rental or new home, and knows just how exhausting it can be. But over the years, as materials have become more user-friendly, this design statement has become much more practical to execute. A few of our favorite ways to incorporate wallpaper around a home are in small, unexpected spaces, as an accent wall, or to bring in natural texture to a room.

SMALL SPACES

Small spaces like bathrooms, mudrooms, and entryways are ideal for trying out a bold pattern because they’re fairly low-risk in terms of the amount of real estate you’re covering. There are other benefits to incorporating wallpaper in small spaces. For example, in a bigger area, like a living room, you have more opportunities to bring in colors, textiles, wall hangings or design elements that are representative of your style. In a small space, you’re limited in what you’re able to do, and wallpaper is a great material to help bridge that gap. Additionally, hanging a print or pattern that you love in a small spot, like a desk or reading nook, can highlight that space in a way that helps it stand out within the larger context of the room.

If you're hanging wallpaper in a bathroom, be sure to check the guidelines of the paper and adhesive you're considering. Over time, steam and humidity can cause some types of wallpaper to peel. No matter what brand or type you decide to go with, always read that brand’s specific installation instructions and carefully prep your walls.

ACCENT WALL

If you’re not wanting wallpaper an entire room, start with covering just one accent wall. Hanging the print on one focal wall rather than everywhere allows you bring pattern into the room in a more subtle way. Wallpaper, with its many prints, textures and patterns has the unique ability to add individuality to a room. In a bedroom, accent wallpaper can set the tone for the room’s furniture and decor and bring in visual interest behind a bed frame. In a kid’s space, it can reflect their style and personality in a way that a shade of paint just can’t convey.

NATURAL TEXTURE

Wallpaper can also serve as a way to bring natural texture into a room. Whether you choose a neutral grasscloth, a textured wood, or something else entirely, this style of wallpaper will provide a subtle finish to any space it’s placed.
