Cooking has a way of connecting us to other cultures and transporting us to places we've always longed to go. Through trying new recipes, we can discover time-honored stories layered into flavors from around the world. As summertime calls us to take in the sunshine and greets us with a burst of fresh air, we often feel the call to travel. One of the best ways to explore the world without leaving home is cooking, and we can simultaneously embrace the sunshine and spontaneity of the season by taking meals outside. We’ve created a guide to inspire outdoor eating this summer—keep reading and discover recipes influenced by some of our favorite stops around the world. So savor the heat, step into the kitchen, and try a new flavor... al fresco.

What You Need for Outdoor Cooking

Eating al fresco makes any evening more memorable, but it does require some forethought. Consider setting the scene with a small outdoor tablescape, including florals that highlight the bright season and fun serveware that holds your sides and seasonings. With the outdoors also comes a layer of heat, so don’t forget to set aside a pitcher of water and plan for some shade.

Practically speaking, cooking outdoors can sometimes require unique techniques and tools to bring out the best flavor and texture. Here are a few outdoor-cooking essentials you may see throughout this recipe collection:

Travel-Inspired Recipes

Let the following recipes guide you into the sunshine and transport you to new places around the world—all within your own backyard.

Pizza

Country of origin: Italy

While outdoor pizza ovens often get the spotlight, grills work too! Use your grill to get that perfectly crunchy pizza crust with a slight char that elevates any medley of flavors.

Paella

Country of origin: Valencian community/Spain

Paella has a rich cultural history with origins in the Valencian community, plus it’s an excellent dish to keep heated outside on a large wok or cast iron skillet. We recommend pairing with our All i Oli and the Smithey Carbon Steel Oval Roaster to level up family-style serving.

Bulgogi with Kimchi

Country of origin: Korea

A classic family recipe, this bulgogi comes from Jo’s mom and is a bright combination of flavors passed through generations with umami bulgogi and the satisfying crunch of kimchi. Grilling the bulgogi browns the meat and adds a nice, full-bodied flavor to the recipe that balances well with the kimchi.

Crêpes

Country of origin: France

These crêpes work wonderfully on a skillet indoors or outdoors. Plus, they provide an opportunity to experiment with new flavors in the fillings—whether you like sweet or savory. (For more flavor inspiration, check out our Campfire Crêpes, Chicken Mushroom Spinach Crêpes, and Lemon Sugar Crêpes).

Grilled Vegetables with Herb Dressing

Country of origin: Universal

Grilled vegetables are a staple in outdoor dining all around the world. With a bright, herby dressing, these veggies can serve well as a side to most cuisines—or be the main moment in any meal. If you’re new to grilling, be sure to watch our Magnolia Workshop on Grilling for Beginners.

Fire Roasted Salsa

Country of origin: Mexico

Roasting the veggies adds another layer to this salsa that makes the flavor even more dynamic and satisfying. Perfect with tortilla chips or as a topping to tacos, enchiladas, or another main, this salsa manages to hold its own and complement any dish it’s paired with.

We hope you’re transported to new places with each of these tips, tools, and recipes. To set the scene for your next outdoor gathering, be sure to explore our grilling + outdoor selection.
